Does anyone know what this insect is? I've found 2 or 3 in my bathroom every night for the last 3 days. It's about 2cm long (body), makes a loud clicking/buzzing sound when it flies, and when squashed it emits a really earthy, vegetation-like smell and blue liquid. I'm in the south of England.
This is the Western Conifer Seed Bug Leptoglossus occidentalis (Heteroptera Coreidae), a North American species that was found in Europe for the first time in 1999 in Italy. Since then it has spread to mny other countries, and was found in GB for the first time in 2007. They are most often noticed in the autumn, when they tend to enter houses in search of a place to hibernate.
That's it! Thank you very much for your help. I've never seen one of these before so it's been a bit unnerving suddenly finding so many in the house. We live near to a row of very mature Scotts Pines - I expect that's where they're coming from.
