Can anyone ID this spider? Poor pic sorry she hides always with light so I get one flash of the camera and one chance, lol. I am thinking false widow? She's pretty big, about 10 - 50pence size but hard to tell as she is so shy and only out at night.
Oh wow. She doesn't bother me at all. I am pretty fascinated by her. I presume it's the males that generally need relocating as they wander? I haven't seen any in the house but I may have not realised what they were. Are they much different in looks?
Many thanks for your reply
Yes, the females tend to stay close to their web & hiding place.
Males are less common but, as you say, they do wander & can get into bother through that. The males are smaller than your specimen & have much smaller abdomens, about the same size as the head? They still have the 'shield' like marking on the abdomen, but tend to be relatively drab & easily mistaken for other species from a distance (with a lot of male spiders, you have to get up close to determine species).
Thank you so much for your help, just one last query. I let the daddy long legs spiders stay, their webs make an awful mess and I am forever clearing them but I remember a long time ago someone telling me that they keep the spider population in my house in check, is this right? I'm not too bothered, my irrational phobia is of wasps and they are far more likely to sting me than for me to get a spider bite.
Once again many thanks
