Could someone help me to identify this insect. In an area where we have recently had a lot of wasps coming to die, I found this wasp like insect also in a nearly dead state. It's about the size of a wasp but has a stinger like appendage about half an inch long. It appears to have a set of clear wings plus a smaller set of dark wings covering the larger ones. Any help would be much appreciated.
This really is just a suggestion but I wonder if it's a Sciara species (a type of fungus gnat). See -
Can you get a better picture?
Thank you so much for your help. Having researched more about the wasp nest beetle I am certain that that is what it is. The insect appeared in an area we have had lots of wasps. People may be interested to know that the wasp nest was in the loft space, since it was thought until recently that wasp nest beetles only parasitised underground nests. Thank you again for all your help. :)
