Been bitten by this spider.  What is it?

The total length of this dead spider (excluding curled up legs) is about 8mm.  It was in my jeans and has bitten me on the back of the knee.   3 hours later its still quite painful.  I'm in the UK.

    Hi AnnaP,

Hard to say for sure, due to the state of the spider, but based on colouring, the 'blunt' front to the head, eye spacing, I'd say that an Amaurobius species is a good candidate. There are a few species, and a couple are often found in houses.

EDIT: Looking again, I can see that the abdomen has twisted relative to the cephalothorax (head) and I am now pretty certain that this is an Amaurobius.

    Regards, Mark.
