Interesting Fungus in Rockery - what could it be?

I noticed these fungi in my rockery - the first time I've ever seen any in there. They are well camouflaged in the little pebbles. Most of them are open, but what looks like a tiny pinecone showed up in a picture when I enlarged it, which looks as though it might be the fungus before it opens right up, with the central spore-sac still in place. All the open ones just have an empty charcoal-coloured area in the centre. I've tried to identify it using my Roger Phillips book of mushrooms, and I reckon it may be a type of Geastrum. I would love to know which one, I haven't been able to find any pictures of them in the condition they currenly appear in my garden, so maybe I am totally wrong!! If anyone could help to identify, that would be great!  Thanks for looking.
