Can anyone help identify this foreign object found in a jar of cockles?
The cockles are picked in by http://www.parsonspickles.co.uk who are based in Carmarthenshire in Wales.
The object looked a little like a grape skin, opaque/green in colour with a dark soft mucus rim around the outside and seeds/organ in the center.
It put us off our cockles, that is for sure!
All help greatly appreciated, thank you
Alas I can’t see great detail as all photos are a little out of focus - but from what I can see it looks like a tunicate, which are very primitive animals. Perhaps you can take a few more images?
Here's a link to the kind of tunicate I think it may be though: http://www.marlin.ac.uk/speciesfullreview.php?speciesID=2628
In truth they are likely to be as nutritious as the cockles
oh wow thank you for your quick reply, that is fascinating.
Unfortunately it was thrown away after taking the photos but we think you are quite right and it looks like a "sea squirt".
How interesting, we may let Parsons know they had a stowaway!
They may be as nutritious but certainly not as appetising!
Thank you for your time.
