Having recently developed an interest in macro photography I am now very keen to identify everything I photograph. I've been collecting a few websites URLs to assist me in this pursuit but have yet to find any really good resources for identifying UK insects and spiders.
Although not perfect (and based on the wrong region - North America) it's the functionality of BugGuide.net, where it's possibly to drill down to a particular insect based on thumbnail images, that I find most useful. I have been looking for an equivalent UK-based website without any real success. I've found a few sites, like British Bugs Gallery (http://www.britishbugs.org.uk/gallery.html), which concentrates on Hemiptera, but I want more
I thought that I might have found a suitable website here at the NHM when I chanced upon a page headed "Insect and spider identification guides and keys" (http://www.nhm.ac.uk/nature-online/life/insects-spiders/identification-guides-and-keys/index.html), which even states "Here are some tools to make recognition easier, including step-by-step keys and comprehensive lists of world species" but where is the link to that section of the website? Below that statement are five sections, none of which are tools or guides! Perhaps my eyesight is failing.
I would be grafeful if someone could please supply that link and/or provide a list of a few relevant website addresses.
I realise that I could upload images to this forum for identification but I'd like to try myself, without having to buy a huge textbook!
Anyway, here's one I made earlier, found in a garden flower bed: body is about 4-5mm. Identification please ...
