Please can you identify this weed that has started growing on my allotment?

The plant produces long thin roots that seem to be starting networks of new plants. It is not difficult to pull up but I have a nasty feeling that bits of root will regrow.

Many thanks,

Chris B.

  • Hi Chris,

your mystery weed looks to be Lepidium draba L.  or Hoary Cress (It used to be known as Cardaria draba). It is a fairly frequent weed species, particularly in Southern England. It is said to have been introduced to Thanet during the Napoleonic wars in the fodder/bedding brought back by the troops but was first seen in this country around Swansea in 1802. You are right to be concerned about it as it will spread by seed and from root fragments and isn't easy to eradicate.
