It is the caterpillar of a sawfly, perhaps gooseberry sawfly.
That name actually covers several species (including other genera, such as Arge and Tenthredo).

But yours has a pale (not black) head, so it could be birch sawfly, Arge pectoralis - http://bugguide.net/node/view/449538/bgimage.
