Anyone please help . How do i go about getting a tree identied using this site ?.
Post some photos - ideally:
- whole tree,
- stem (showing several leaves),
- anything unusual (eg twisted bark texture, different coloured underside to the leaves).
Depending on the time of year, some of those may not be available on the tree. But you may still be able to help, by looking on the ground; that applies to leaves, flowers and fruit.
And tell us where and when the photos were taken, and whether the tree is growing in a natural or garden/park habitat.
I think it is katsura, Cercidiphyllum japonicum
(note the leaves are opposite not alternate, unlike Cercis)

Thanks for the reply I have more pics that may be of use but i will have to wait for the kids to help with uploads, approaching retirement, I'm hiding behind the old dogs new tricks thing.....
Curious: I now see, in these further photos, alternate leaves (rather than opposite as I thought I had seen earlier).
Which means it is not katsura.
Candidates: Cersis siliquastrum (Judas tree), Tilia species (lime) and Alnus species (alder).
If you've got any clues about flower or fruit (perhaps on hte ground/pot from last year) that would help greatly. But it may be too young.
I might have some more thoughts later.
Update: for general future reference, you could try the NHM's tree key
It covers quite a few species, but not all; certainly there are ornamentals that are not included.
This may help, too
