Can anybody help me to identify this moth it is very unusual with distinct black rings on the leg joints and the scalloped wing. I attach two photographs.
This is a lovely moth, they are called Herald (Scoliopteryx libatrix), these moths will find a place at some point and hibernate like some of our butterflies do, in a shed or outbuilding.
I quite agree Crystal - lovely; one of my favourite moths (I have quite a few!).
I used to see this feeding at sallow blossom in Surrey (its larvae also feed on sallow).
The larva is a fairly nondescript green colour most of its life, but the last larval instar is distinctive in having dark markings near the head - search for 'Vorpuppe' here - http://www.lepiforum.de/lepiwiki.pl?Scoliopteryx_Libatrix
In Europe, there is only one other species in the Calpinae subfamily - Calyptra thalictri, which is much duller
