bone long oval from carboot sale 5CM APPROX
Thought it was fossil wood and shelved it for years then noticed the groves etc its calcite or aragonite with poss iron core (
Its not a belemite! (im pretty sure ) no radiating calcite and lots of pores like bone
the narrow er end has the hole looks like marrow
or modern looks like it been transported in water after due to scratches marks on side or poss bite marks ?
NO location unfortunatly poss surrey or S. England
Not sure it is fossil; could be archaeological.
Might need to bring/send it to the NHM, and might need to give permission for it to be sawn-across.
First, see if anybody else here recognizes it...
I'd say it was the remains of an antler handled implement - a knife sharpening steel, a knife, a corkscrew (something of that ilk) that has likely been at the bottom of the Thames or otherwise buried for a few decades.
