Saw this a few weeks ago and wondered what it was....
Made quite a loud buzzing type sound and has very long back legs.
Anybody know what it is?
Some species of Water Boatman?
Actually, it is Notonecta glauca, the greater water boatman.
It is the most common of the four species of Notonecta in the UK.
There are some good photos of it from other angles here

You might also note:
"The water boatman's saliva is toxic and its bite is quite painful. It is otherwise harmless."
If you were are its prey, however, you'd be in trouble because they "are among the fiercest of the bugs" (Chinery, 1993, p.113).
Thanks sorry for delay in replying.... Just seen this. Was wondering if they'd bite as it buzzed very loud . Insects that buzz always put me on red alert! :)
