I saw this on a local path (Madrid) and can't find anything like it in my insect book. Anyone know what it is?
It looks just like a male glow-worm (Lampyris noctiluca).
Thanks. With your help I found this in my insect guide, but not illustrated with an orange/red head cover.
Here's a photo of a Spanish Lampyris noctiluca
(without the black head of the one in your guide book)
(note: females are wingless)
But also consider firefly, Photuris lucicrescens
I saw these at night time in Epirus in NW Greece in 1994, ghostly lights dancing over the fields (often near dry stone walls). But I never managed to find one during the day, so have never seen one in the flesh.
