Thanks but none of those are right, abdomen was rounded, head same size as body with what looked like two large eyes that fill the head

I was guessing wrong: not a hoverfly (family Syrphidae), but a horse-fly (family Tabanidae). These flies bite and suck blood from horses, cattle, sometimes humans. Your specimen looks like Tabanus sp.
