I've seen other 'wood wasps' or Horntails before, but not these. Are they an Ichumenon wasp? I'm guessing these are male and female of the same species. We live in upland Carmarthenshire, and they've patrolled our large wood pile over the last 3 weeks, mainly at dawn and dusk. Would love to know what they are, and how common or rare they might be, The female is on a young Norway Spruce shoot tip , for scale.
I'm pretty sure it's Rhyssa persuasoria which is an ichneumon parasite of the larvae of wood wasps. So the long ovipositor on the end of the abdomen is what she uses for inserting her eggs in to the wood. See -
