Identification of this hornet-like insect, please

Hornet like insect 1.jpgHornet like insect 2.jpgHornet like insect 3.jpgHornet like insect side view.jpgApologies - I don't think that this is a wasp, but it's wasp-like, and that's all I've got to go on at present. It flew into my bird-ringing mist-net in the Fens (Nr Ely) this morning, and I've never seen anything like it. The creature was larger than a hornet, had clubbed antennae, no obvious sting and biting mouth-parts like a wasp (not a proboscis like a moth). It's not a fly, I'm pretty sure. Can anyone identify it, please? It flew off after release, so I don't have the specimen. Thanks, Tony Martin
