2 YEAR OLD SON BITTEN BY THESE THINGS PLEASE HELP !

Hi, my 2 yr old son was recently taken to the doctor with a rash , the doctor said it was insect bites and there was nothing he could do, shortly afterwards I found small long-ish things crawling out of my food cupboard, no visable legs, just a shell similar to a beatle of some kind,

This photo is one I just found that has massive legs so I'm guessing its a mature one, please help me identify these things,

what are they?,

what do they feed off ?

can the bites be dangerous ?

P.S. I found one in a cereal box I don't know if that is any help, it may not be a big deal , but I'm concerned for my son , thanks in advance !

Last but not least how do I get rid of them , THANKS !

The insect in your picture is just a crane fly, probably a Limonia species. Neither it nor the larvae would do you any harm. Perhasp you ought to get a picture of the shell like things in your cupboard.

hi this is Rorz and to me it looks like a type of mosquito, to remove it you need to add some ointment which could be found at the pharmacy just ask if you could have some cream to remove and heal a mosquito bite. i hope it works

hi it is rorz again i am going to answer your questions it is a mosquito it feeds on blood the bites could be dangerous as mosquito do carry diseases but not all do so dont panic also the bites is from the mouth as it needs to get down through the skin to the blood to suck it up.also throw away the cereal you found it in as they could either lay eggs of that is its bed.

rorz  It is NOT a mosquito!

It's a crane fly and totally innocuous. It will NOT suck your blood, It will NOT bite you, it will NOT steal your babies.  It will Not harm you in any way, unless maybe you jump out of a first floor window trying to avoid it.

If you want further identification see this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Limonia_nubeculosa

I'm afraid I can't see it being a mosquito. It still looks like a moth to me. Possibly one of the many Clepsis moths. I've included a picture of one here. Although it's not exactly the same wing pattern, the shape closely resembles the moth in the picture supplied by HELP.

I've also included a picture of a Mosquito for comparison.

What an interesting cupboard you seem to have. Sorry, but to me that looks like a Moth. It's not a biting insect either.

Do you have pets? maybe a cat or a dog? If so, I'd be looking closely at them to see if they brought some passengers into your home. People (children included) react adversly to animal flea bites. The reaction is to the flea saliva rather than the actual bite.

A typical infestation of animal fleas shows as red bite marks from the knees down on adult Humans, however, children get the bites all over them as they are frequently playing on the floor and are within the juming range of the flea.

If you find that fleas might be the culprit, I'd Google the problem for advice on how to get rid of them.

    Regards

    Habdab.

Re: 2 YEAR OLD SON BITTEN BY THESE THINGS PLEASE HELP !

Can you describe your son's bites?

    What part of his body?

Does he play in the countryside area beyond your garden?

You wrote "I found small long-ish things crawling out of my food cupboard, no visable legs, just a shell similar to a beatle of some kind," .

Do you have a picture of these?

In my experience many bugs that cause "rash-like" bites are very very tiny - hardly visible to the naked eye.

I'm surprised at the dismissive attitude of your GP!

    Ray
