Could someone possibly identify this bug for me?
Unfortunately this was the only picture i took that turned out clear before i released it. Therefore you cannot see its back which i remember to be hard and opened up to be winged (4 wings i think).
There are normally numerous of these same bugs which measure about 20mm in length flying around my tree and other areas/trees around me outside late at night but never during the day.
Also weirdly enough, if i walk around the garden these bugs are sometimes buzzing on the floor as if unable to fly.
They make a very loud buzzing noise when flying.
any help identifying this insect would be greatly appreciated thanks!
It is a chafer beetle, probably a summer chafer, Amphimallon solstitiale.
There's a useful key to British chafer beetles here
