Grown from eggs on clematis - identification please. (5).JPG

I have grown 10 of these from eggs found on a clematis leaf. The largest is now 30mm long and has developed black side markings .

Can anyone identify it and give me some guidance on how to ensure  that they will pupate.properly (i.e. do they need soil and do they need to be kept damp). Please look at the attachments for closeups.

Finally the mystery is solved. These caterpillars turned out to be from a noctuid by the pretty name Angle Shades (phlogophora meticulosa). As they grew and darkened  the familiar `chevrons` along the back appeared. There was an orange specimen in my garden last year so its not that much of a surprise.
