Spotted today on a kitchen window in Portugal. Much bigger than a normal fly and yet no hairs as is if it were a hornet. Can anyone identify?
I've not been able to find anything similar on google images. Photo with mobile phone up close, so more or less picture is to scale.
It's a tabanid - which are biting flies. This one looks a bit redder than the ones I see in the UK. There's a similar one (from Spain) here -
