Hi, I found this today in my garden (in Essex). I was wondering if someone could identify it for me as I can't find it on the web and haven't seen it before. It's approx 1.5cm long. Thanks! C
think it is a braconid wasp (male).
But I can't be sure; I can't see enough from your photo, and the Braconidae has 'nearly 1200 representatives in Britain' (http://www.royensoc.co.uk/sites/default/files/Vol07_Part11.pdf).
I thought braconid wasps were mostly fairly tiny, this looks like quite a large insect. I wonder if one possibility is a male wood wasp. See -
Wood wasp is definitely a possibility; you're better on these things than me.
I'm happy to promote your suggestion over mine.
