What are the odd things under tree

First thing, a thankyou for identifying a tree the other day.

Now a new mystery for my wife and I to be solved.

Came home from holiday in September 2008 and found the leaves from the apple tree almost all gone but the apples OK. found these brown hard things on the path underneath. What are they and what made them.

They are the same as the other things barry

Well the brown things on the floor are 'frass', which is a rather quaint name for caterpillar poo - so I think we know what defoliated your apple tree (nice crop of apples mind you). As to which species, well that’s more tricky. Given the size of the individual frass pellets it would have been a fairly large caterpillar/s - on apple I would suspect the Eyed Hawkmoth, Smerinthus ocellata, but that’s just a hunch.
