What is this - keep finding in the house - are they a problem?

Hi keep finding these large beetles in the house - they are about 1" long - thought they were being dropped down chimney by birds but have now found them thoughout the house including kitchen work surfaces.  We live in East Yorkshire.

What are they - the kids think they are fantastic I do too sort of as long as they are not near the food!!  Please helpP1120691.JPG

  • This is the Lesser Stag beetle, Dorcus parallelepipedus. The larvae of these beetles feed on decaying wood and the adults, that are out and about now, fly at dusk. There’s a chance that they have flown through open windows/doors I guess but more chance that they have crawled beneath doors if there are gaps. Otherwise they may be feeding on low level decaying timbers if you house comprises of such. They are harmless, but can give a painful nip if they catch the fleshy part between the vase of your thumb and forfinger (he says from experience).
