Spondylus

Hello everyone, I have found this fossil. Does anyone know if it is a common fossil? It's dimensions are 13x13 CM.

Hi NickGeo - where did you find it? Sometimes, fossils are rare/unknown from certain localities.

    All the best,

    Fiona

Dear NickGeo -  My expertise is mostly UK Fossils, so I shall be interested to see any comments that arise from your find.

There many species of Spondylus, it is very unlikely to be rare (sorry to disappoint), there have been several papers written about Spondylus from the Pliocene of Cyprus. Perhaps try an internet search.

        Nice specimen,

        All the best,

        Fiona

        Nick,

Spondylus is a definite possibility, but I cannot be definitive about it; I simply am not sure what all the alternatives are.

You could see if George Konstantinou can help.

You can send him a message and photo here - https://www.facebook.com/CyprusFossils.

(George has a very good collection of Cyprus fossils, and is the founder of the Association for the Protection of Biodiversity and Natural Heritage of Cyprus.)

An interesting paper on the Pliocene of Cyprus, FYI -
