A snake seen today in a Surrey garden.  But what is it?

Hi-  Hope you can assist us.  My wife saw this snake (- approx.60cm long) on the edge of our 'vegetable patch' where we have some untamed grass.  It played dead for several minutes, and then moved away rather slowly.  It had a forked fang that came out as it moved off.  We have many frogs (our pond is only 10m away) and we have already had a nasty surprise when we lifted the lid on our compost bin, 40m away, to find 2-3 snakes basking on the top of the rotting vegetation - (now THAT was one of our 'F' moments in gardening!).

I'm sure all the experts wil be screaming "It's a grass snake, Dumbo", but although the pic shows no evidence of the adder markings, it also does not show any yellow-ish collar, so I am a little worried.  Our 3 year old boy has, until now, been able to play around with his JCB digger in the veg patch.  So is this a grass snake? Or should we be worried more?

Thank you for your help.DSC03856.JPG
