Does anyone know what is this tree? It grows in Woking (Surrey).
It is a Ceanothus (California lilac).
There are many species of Ceanothus and even more cultivars, so it is difficult to be sure from one photo, but I suspect it might be Ceanothus thyrsiflorus
Here's a cultivar of that, called 'Skylark'
They can be stunning when in flower, and quite attractive as a background when just in leaf. But they are fussy in some respects, and can resent pruning into older wood.

Has to be said that they are also a great resource of pollen and nectar for many species of bee, wasp and beetles - I am surprised at the number of species it attracts in my garden; well worth the space it takes up.
