A friend recently showed me a specimen of Bombylius major which was obtained in South Tyneside on an unknown recent date (but probably late April/early May). Does anyone out there know whether this species can be expected in NE England, or is it unusual to find one here?

(Unfortunately that site is a bit unstable at the moment, but ...it is still really useful).
They do seem to be spreading North - particularly along the East Coast, but I've yet to see one in my inland Sheffield area. (Yet in the poor weather at the begining of April 2013 they were almost the only Thing on the Wing where I was staying in Thames-side Surrey).
