Hi, wondering if anyone can identify the insect in my picture? Found them mainly in the bathroom of our new house. They tend to be mainly in the bath itself, occasionally fly but mainly crawling about slowly and are easy to catch. Not sure how they are getting in as they seem to just appear even when the window is closed but I think there's a hole small enough for them to enter.
It is an ichneumonid wasp; there are lots of genera and species.
It is somewhat like Dolichomitus imperator.
This may enable you to get started looking, while awaiting somebody else's closer ID
Thanks for your response. That certainly looks similar,,although I haven't seen any arch their body up like in some photos. They are pretty small, around a centimetre or so in length. Do you know if they can sting or any ways to try and stop/deter them coming in? Also I am in the United Kingdom, in case that makes any difference.
As I say, there are lots of different ones, so your (small) one may be something else.
I have never been stung by any ichneumonid, and have never had them show any aggression to me.
...Which isn't a categorical 'no, they don't sting humans', but maybe gives an idea of them being low risk.
Stopping them coming in...
