hi. i'm a complete bug novice, but found this dead critter in my son's toys. it looks a little like a small furry bee but has a long, thick stinger unlike anything i've noticed before. can someone enlighten me please?
This insect mimics a bee, but in fact it's a type of fly called drone fly (family Syrphidae). I guess this is an Eristalis tenax. The thing sticking out of its abdomen is its ovipositor, so it must be a female. Here's how females lay eggs with that thing.
