Butterfly identification needed

We found these butterfly wings on Knoydart Peninsula - on the mainland opposite the bottom end of the Isle of Skye - at sea level, on the South shore of Loch Hourn.

I can't relate them to any British butterfly I know. I can't vouch for having the wings in the correct position with regard to each other because that was all we found; the body had been eaten. Can anyone help?

The first two images are of the front of the wings, the second two of the backs. The flash images are a bit bleached out but they do show the distinctive magenta-ish markings near the tips.

We would much appreciate it if anyone could throw some light on what this is.
