Hello. I currently live in Japan and spotted this insect on the windowsill of my friends apartment. He lives very near a small stream and some rice fields.
It wasn't moving at the time so it was possibly dead, but we quickly closed the window after taking a picture just in case.
Any ideas? Thanks!
I'm pretty sure it is the 'skin' of a mayfly (Ephemeroptera); one of the species with three cerci (tails).
Mayfly larvae moult their skin several times as they grow. After they obtain wings, they moult once more.
I think your specimen is what is left after the last moulting.
