Fossil from Somalia?

This fossil (at least I presume its a fossil) was given to me by a Somali friend on a trip to Somaliland (Northern Somalia).

I'm an anthropologist by training and have absolutely no idea where to start finding out what it is but I'm really intrigued. If anyone can help me to shed some light I'd be really grateful.

I terms of size I would say its around 7/8cm in length and 5/6cm in diameter.

Thanks for the help.

Josh

    Re: Fossil from Somalia?

    Josh,

    Intruguing!...

Is it a spiral (I think so, but it could be separate rings, going just on the photo)?

Please could we have a photo from each end as well.

It would be useful to know its density, as a means of determining whether it is made of rock (ie. a fossil) or not. You can determine its volume by water displacement, weight on kitchen scales, preferably ending up with density in g/ml (=g/cc).

Any details on location would also be useful (Northern Somalia being quite large).

    Mike
