Insect taking flight

My son, who is a video maker, ( has shot this slow motion infra-red video of an insect, black in colour, taking flight.

apart from the interest of the filming, perhaps someone will identify it for us.

Thanks, Barry

what a fantastic video, really interesting to see how the beetle folds back the short wing casing - the elytra - into the centre of it's body to take off.

I am pretty sure your beetle is a Devil's Coach Horse. The pics in this link show it with the abdomen curved upwards, they do this in response to threat but the abdomen is in line with the rest of the body when they are otherwise unconcerned, as in your son's video.

    Thanks for sharing!
