Gambia insect ID please!

I'm currently in The Gambia, West Africa (fly back to UK tomorrow) and wonder if anyone can ID the attached insect for me?

It was about an inch and a half long in total, was rather brown in colour (not a good photo) and when it flew showed amazing electric-blue wings. It seemed to be pale underneath, with some dark spots or marks. The legs are all about the same length, clustered near but just below the eye, and the strange elongated "snout" appeared to be rigid.

It was spotted in the Brufut area of The Gambia, alongside a bush track, last week (October 28th).

Quite honestly I haven't got a clue on this one. All I know is that if it had been resting on a brown twig it wouldn't have been seen at all! The end of the rainy season occurred much later than has been the norm, not ending until past the middle of October, instead of mid-September. Whether that is significant in the case of this creature I don't know.

That's about all the information I can come up with. I just hope someone out there recognises it!

Many thanks in advance!

Sue
