Can anyown tell me what this is?
The tree is very old and as tall as our two storey house.
There are no leave at the moment but are a few buw buds.
Some parts of the tree look like Hawthorn but I am not sure if this is a separate tree which has grown together with the larger tree.
My neighbour said he thought the tree was Ironwood.
Thanks in advance,
I think it is Robinia pseudoacacia, which has various common names, including black locust. See here for some details of twigs, which I think match your first photo - .
I don't think it has an 'ironwood' name. It is certainly not persian ironwood (Parrotia persica).
Here's a list of the various 'ironwood' trees - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ironwood
If it is Robinia pseudoacacia, it should produce racemes of white flowers in summer, assuming the summer is warm enough and the tree is old enough (from its size I suspect it is big enough).
Many Thanks Mike!
I did some searches on Google and you are definitely correct. This could have taken me fvorever without your help.
