I'm doing a school project on insects with my son and wondered if someone could tell us what this is please? It was about 0.5cm in length and was walking along the patio. It seemed to be able to jump about 4cm in height.
It is a thrip.
Which one, I can't say; there are several thousand species, with about 150 in Britain.

It's a springtail (Collembola). I can't narrow down the ID further, sorry. Species that live above ground have springing organs, as you've observed.

Thanks both, that's really helpful. I looked at the Collembola page and it did look a lot like an entomobrya. Certainly trumps the spider and woodlice we had on the list before.
Yes, maybe. But I wonder if yours is a juvenile because it has rather short antennae. Therefore, if you imagine it bigger with longer antennae but with similar markings, then others look possible e.g. Orchesella.
