I recently visited the Andaman Islands and was fortunate see and photograph a shrew there. I have narrowed its identification down to 2 species ( Jenkin's Shrew and Andaman Shrew) but they are very similar and , apparently, both very rare ( and rarely photographed!). Can you help with the i.d. ? and should I contact anyone about the sighting and maybe forward the photographs to them?
Many thanks, John.
I would suggest doing some research on papers about Andaman Island shrews and shortlist a few researchers who've studied them. Email them some images and and they may be able to confirm your thoughts or suggest alternatives, I'm sure they will be interested in your images either way.
Thqank you both for your comments. I have managed to establish that the Shrew is almost certainly one of the orignal two I mentioned..but then it gets difficult!! There is almost no literature on them, nor photographs...and I don't have the means to access the literature to find out who has studied them. It's quite possible that no work has been done on them since they were first described. At the moment I have a number of avenues i am pursuing.....a researcher at the Bombay NHS, a leading amateur mammal expert and the IUCN Redlist. If I have any success, I'll let you know !!
