Help with identifying this plant please

Can anyone identify this plant please.  The pictures were taken last year by a friend and unfortunately are not very sharp.  There is a wisteria in the background to confuse things.  The picture of the overall plant shows some small flowers at the top of the plant, and then the more detailed picture shows the actual flower.  It grows to about 2-3 feet.

The flowers look very like irises, but I have not seen one with such spindly stalks. I'm sure one of the experts will be able to help.

    Hi,

Liz is right this is a species of Iris. I think that it is Iris confusa (apt sounding name in this instance) which is sometimes called the Bamboo Iris because of the spindly stalks with the fan of Iris-like leaves at their top. It is from China. The most similar species which is also grown in this country is Iris japonica - that has rather more frilly falls to the flowers. They are very distinctive because of the stalky growth habit.

    regards
