I found this in the garden today and wondered if anyone could identify the animal? I'm a bit concerned it's human! The scale is centimetres. Also, I wondered if it was possible to estimate the age of this? The house was built in 1801 and I live in a rural area of north east Scotland, if this information adds any clues!
This looks like the hip end of a femur (thigh bone). Human hip ends of femur are beween 3.8cm and 4.9cm. There is no feature on this view of the bone itself which would exclude or confirm human origin. You could post some other views, rotate the bone 90 degrees and 180 degrees and turn it over and do the same. Although it sounds alarmist you should also contact the police, this is NOT a 999 call but just a call to the local station, they get a fair few of such calls and initially will only want to get the bone properly identified.
I would agree that this is very possibly human but with so little of it present it's difficult to confirm from this photograph alone. John is right in that the correct thing to do when you find something that you think could be human is to contact your local police station, even if you think it is old.
