What is this bird please?
Each year i do a beached bird survey in the Lowestoft area for RSPB and i always find the wings only of an unknown species - see photo. Can anyone i/d it please? I've asked around but with no success.
This looks like a Woodcock (Scolopax rusticola) wing.
Many thanks. Remains seem a bit 'racey' for a woodcock, but may be. The problem is i find at least one set of wings each year i do the survey, which is just one day per year. Can't imagine so many woodcock falling into the sea!!
I agree with Florin. This wing is from a Eurasian Woodcock. See plate 64 in Shorbirds: An identification guide to the waders of the world, by Peter Hayman, John Marchant and Tony Prater, or another guide to birds of Europe.
