What on earth is this?

Hi there,

Could you please help me to identify this potential fossil please? It is in flint, and was found just under the surface whilst digging in a field in Bledlow Ridge, Buckinghamshire. I've tried to research it but had no joy as yet. Anything you can tell me, I'd be very grateful. Many thanks, Kevin.

Interesting find - what your looking at is an internal cast where the original fossil has gone - if you look at the top of it in the first picture you can see something that looks like a fragment of the original shell.

I think the original fossil was an ammonite - does any of it appear on the reverse side of the block? If it doesn't its either a fragment of an ammonite or an uncoiled (heteromorph) ammonite section thats been later encased in flint/chert.

    Regards,

    Ryan
