Fly with a yellow head?

This large fly (about 2 cm long) landed on a pine tree in our garden (near Madrid). It stayed there a long time.

As can be seen it has a marked pattern on the wings, a yellow head and a black and yellow body. I suspect it is some sort of hover fly but I can't find it in my book nor anything like it by means of an on-line search. It doesn't appear to have any antennae for which reason I am not thinking bee, wasp or hornet.

Can anyone identify it and what was it doing on the tree?

Alan
