What is digging up my lawn?

Over the past few nights some creature has dug a series of holes on a our lawn and a slope with grass on it. It appears to be digging in places where our resident mole has made its runs in previous years. There are traces of what appear to be faecal matter. We do have foxes and hares in the vicinity. Can anyone identify what animal is digging theses holes?

    Hello,

These look like badger droppings and badger latrines. See http://www.ispot.org.uk/node/232017

    Yours,

        Hi phil d

Many years ago we went on holiday near Lyme Regis, secluded, in the country nice and a massive large garden.

But the lawn had some fantastic 'scrattings' in it, I knew they were not done by rabbits because of the size of the 'diggins' so that nite I put a trail into the garden with the burnt sausages from the barbecue.

I lead a trail of them from a hole in the fence that was well worn to the middle of the garden that was flood lit, about 10pm I noticed a noise from an animal rubbing against the fence as it entered the garden and we were all privalidged to see a Badger not more than a few feet away from us.

I think it knew we were there and was almost 'tame'

We live in a city and to witness nature like this is something we will never forget, thankfully my family and I remained silent untill the creature dissapeared into the dark after quite a while.

In reply to your question as to whether you can do something gentle to discourage Badgers ,the answer is no, they are very persistent.I had them some years ago and put 1 1/2 inch wire netting round the garden but they just bit through it. Eventually I bought small mesh wire netting as used in aviaries which they couldn't get their teeth on to and high enough for them not to jump over- very expensive, but they are very inteligent and they will get round or over it if they can.     Valency.
