I found this on uk east coast beach with alot of other interesting fossil like object. We've nearly identified everything but this interesting lightweight object. Please if anyone can enlighten us I would be very grateful thanx x
Can you provide dimensions for this - approximate diameter and thickness would be useful.
Hi it's 3cm by 3.5cm...thankuoooo
It is a caudal vertebrae of a cetacae. The species depends on the size; 2p size would be porpoise, 3-4cm, dolphin and >5cm whale
My sizes were a little bit out. 3cmX3.5cm is typical for a Harbour porpoise. In Britain dolphin will be quite a bit bigger than this but worldwide some dolphins are a simillar size to porpoise. White sided dolphin caudal (tail) vertebrae are 5.5cm x 6cm.
