Hi, could someone help me identify the bone skull you see in the pictures. I took these pictures on a recent trip to the Middle East. Some local Bedouins showed me this skull and i have no idea what it is.
Hi John, thanks for the input. You are correct about it belonging to a whale. I showed the pictures to a friend and he said it belongs to a whale from the genus Ziphius species and that it is pretty rare. Sorry i don't have more pictures to show you. The funny thing about this skull was that it was discovered in the desert of Shabwa in Southern Yemen some 300 miles from the nearest beach.
In case you are keen to pursue, and possibly revisit Shabwa to look again at the skull, there is a very good site from the Smithsonian on beaked whales http://vertebrates.si.edu/mammals/beaked_whales/pages/main_menu.htm. Might be a bit difficult to use with your photos, but gives some good pictures of different species. How did it get into the desert though? Maybe somebody picked it up on the beach and took it home in a pickup as a souvenir?
Thanks, i will check out the site. It was dug up in a very sandy desert area but, i guess it is possible that someone took it to the desert on a pickup truck....not very likely....but, possible. I was thinking more along the lines that the desert may have once been covered by the Ocean.
