What is the difference between a sycamore and a maple?

Would someone be able to tell me how to tell syacmores and maples apart?

  • Hello,

first of all I'd recommend you to give a look at this wikipedia page that sums up well all what can be confusing about the use of the word "sycamore/sycomore" :

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sycamore

As you can see, all maple trees belong to the genus Acer (order Sapindales).

If you are from the UK or Ireland, then sycamore probably refers to Acer pseudoplatanus, the sycamore maple, or great maple.

Americans usually refer to all species of the genus Platanus (order Proteales).

All those are only associated with the word sycamore because of the resemblance their leaves bear with those of Ficus sycomorus (order Rosales), a fig species well known as it is mentionned in the Bible under the name "sycomore".
