I have searched for Lygaeus sp and found Lygaeus kalmii - this is found in the USA. Would it also be in Cyprus? It isn't quite the same as the one in my photo. http://bugguide.net/node/view/449073

Thanks for these further names. I've looked them both up and they are nearly the same but they don't have the attractive spots with pale markings. Perhaps it's a Cyprus sub species.
Well, there are three species of Lygaeus on Cyprus (forget L saxatilis that I linked to):
It does not necessarily have to be a Lygaeus (but it is similar enough to be) - on this page you find a checklist (Lygaeidae is somewhere halfway down).
mmmm...I see this is a challenging area! I have learned today that beetles and bugs are different and that the same family is very widespread.
