Does anyone know what this is?
I've had it years, found it on the ground while out walking.
It's really heavy for its size 44g
It's NOT magnetic.
Really, really hard, and metallic. Totally spherical.
Thought it could be remnants from an iron mill or something like that. Then thought meteorite - but it's not magnetic?
Thanks in advance
To me it looks like a septarian nodule (concretion). Somewhat like this (by the way the text on the page says the name comes from seven - septem in latin - which is wrong, as it comes from septum, enclosure, fence).
This is a Hematite from the UK.
Got to say i think Episcophagus may be right with septarian nodule, it would seem more likely especially after reading some info on hematite, also must say that minerals are definitely not a strong point of mine & i just thought it looked like an example thats in a book i have .
So unless someone who does know can give you a definite i.d i would be inclined to stick with his/her? suggestion.
Going by your discription I think its Marcassite,
Often they have hollow centres which make them lighter, sometimes sperical due to erotion and does oxidize,
Or you get Pyrite which is very similar, or though by your discription I would lean more toward Marcassite.
