spider identification

phone 013.JPGhi was just wandering if anyone can help me identify this lovely looking spider i had to catch it in a glass as was quite fiesty i have found quite a few of these in my home they dont bother me but just interested to find out what they are as never seen them before im located in north yorkshire thanks

      It's an Amaurobius, a lace web spider. They normally live outside in holes in walls, bark etc. but occasionally one finds its way indoors. The one in the photo is an adult male. Dunno about species - either similis or fenestralis.

      Actually, the only spider I've ever been bitten by was an Amaurobius but that was when I unwisely tried to pick it up between two fingers. It hurt a bit but there were no lasting effects apart from a small reddish mark.


      Normally I'd say it would be beneficial for it to be outdoors though now the frosts have arrived it might be condemning it to death - I don't know. As it's an adult male it's probably looking for a female.
